Chess: a strategy of the mind

Ray Kappel of Pawnee City, won the 2012 Class B Chess Player of the Year award presented by the Nebraska State Chess Association. The award is given based on the number of points accumulated in various chess tournaments throughout the year. Kappel is a reporter with Sunrise Publications, Inc., at the Pawnee City and Tecumseh newspaper offices. Kappel totaled 8.5 points while participating in chess tournaments throughout
2012. Most of Nebraska’s chess tournaments are played in Lincoln and Omaha. Kappel said there are approximately 30 other players competing in these tournaments. He added that there are approximately 200 chess players
in Nebraska, but several of the players are no longer active in the state chess competitions.
